Bees make so much more than honey. They’re also responsible for the growth of fruit and vegetables. As much as a third of the food we eat depends on these pollinators, yet bee populations are in swift decline from habitat loss, pesticides and climate change.
Since 1900 the UK has lost 20 bee species and a further 35 are heading towards extinction. Moreover, there has been a 45% loss of commercial honeybees in the UK since 2010. Without bees, food prices will soar and it will cost farmers £1.8 billion a year to hand pollinate their crops.
We depend on bees and now it’s up to us to help them out. That’s why we’re supporting BeeUrban’s beekeeping oasis in Kennington. After all, what could be better than protecting bees and making local honey right on your doorstep?
The project comprises ten hives surrounded by beautiful giant trees, vegetable patches, herb gardens and a pond full of stickleback. It’s truly a sanctuary of green nestled in an urban metropolis. BeeUrban run hives for other organisations including the National Theatre and Southbank Centre and they want to expand their reach across London, starting in Clapham
